Mary Astor is such a beautiful woman, and only 37 when she filmed this movie. Her hairstyle is TERRIBLE! No one could get away with that hairstyle and look good. It ages her about 20 years. Maybe that's what they were trying to do...make her look older, but I'd be so mad if I was told to wear my hair like that, even for a movie role!

Truly hideous hairdos are not unknown in every decade, but the 40's produced some real pieces of work. Bette Davis is notorious for some real atrocities. We just have to accept their ways are not our ways, that ugly hairdos were what the well-groomed were aiming for and that if we were transported back in time with even straight natural hair, we would be looked upon as bizarre.
sharei agree...the hairdo made ms astor looks older...but she carried it with dignity and i also agree that bette davis seldom had a good hairstyle that made her stylish...but she looks good in "hollywood canteen" period...
