A lot of fun!

I watched Sweet Rosie O'Grady because I'm trying to see more Betty Grable movies and also because the title made me think of that Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs is singing "The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady." I ended up being really glad I watched it!

In the first half there's a couple of musical numbers that I didn't think too much of, but otherwise this movie is very entertaining in a silly 1940s Technicolor musical kind of way. Betty Grable is cute and scrappy and chirpy and she's surrounded by a pretty good supporting cast, like Robert Young and Adolphe Menjou. Several of the musical numbers are really a lot of fun, and most of the less interesting numbers are tolerable.

The story is ... Well, it's about a famous singer returning to New York in the 1880s after many years away and she gets into a ridiculous feud with a sleazy reporter. And then ...

Well, just watch it! At the end, Betty Grable plays Rosie O'Grady playing Madeline Marlowe playing Rosie O'Grady singing a song titled "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" in a play called "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" in a movie called "Sweet Rosie O'Grady."

It's almost as existential as "Passage to Marseilles."

Janet! Donkeys!
