Barbara Britton

I recall hearing or reading that she was so traumatized by the realism of this film that she had to seek psychiatric help afterwards. Later, she wound up marrying her doctor and they had a long-lasting and happy relationship.

Her dilemma was reminiscent of actor Lew Ayres, who was so affected by the realistic battle scenes in the 1930 film "All Quiet on the Western Front" that when WW2 broke out a decade later, he registered as a conscientious objector. His popularity plummeted as a result in the midst of patriotic fervor, and M-G-M dropped him from the successful "Dr. Kildare" series. He seemed to have dropped out of sight, but actually he volunteered for ambulance service (he did not want to become a combatant himself) and distinguished himself in battlefield conditions, without any fanfare. Only in the postwar years did his career take off again when his heroic service record was revealed.
