What's the missing minute?

The IMDB page says 43 minutes but the DVD Details page says 42 minutes, and the DVD does have a notice plate up front that says "has been edited for content" ... anybody have any idea what they cut out? This historical revisionism is a pisser...

Was this the film where Gaucho Goofy was seen smoking? I know Disney made changes to a couple of cartoons where characters were seen with cigarettes. (The "Pecos Bill" segment of MELODY TIME, for example.)

Yep, that's what I heard, that it had Goofy smoking. That footage does exist, though, and I intend to find it... Thanks for the reply.

I'm thinking there was a laser disk release of this which had the scene intact. (I believe the laser of MELODY TIME had the full, original version of the "Pecos Bill" segment which was later changed for VHS and DVD because of smoking. Yet, in spite of these alterations, the packaging for the tampered product is misleadingly labled "fully restored.")

My recently aquired copy (a USA "Walt Disney Gold Collection" VHS) doesn't have that on the packaging, it does however contain a notice befor the movie stating that "this feature has modified for content and to fit your TV screen".

I was intreguied (and annoyed) by both statements so I came here to the IMDB. I wasn't too bothered to read it had been cut down from 1:37 to 1:33 ratio, but to find the exercised footage was of Goffy smoking... Jeez.

Seems there a lot of evidence to suggest that Goofy smoking is the missing footage.

I, however, find the ending a little too abrupt. The sequence goes from Donald hiccupping in sync to the samba beat to suddenly a montage of nightclubs in Rio, with Donald only shown dancing in shadow (with a female samba dancer).

I can't help but suspect something got cut there as well. Leonard Maltin, in "The Disney Films", says that Donald and Joe Carioca go out and paint the town red. Well, Joe seems to suddenly vanish from the film after Donald starts hiccupping.

I can't imagine there were 60 seconds of Goofy smoking. That's a long time onscreen. There must've been other edits made as well, so if the ending is awkward, maybe there were selections from there that were removed as well.

There's nothing up with the audio quality. It's 2008, and that's how we make records — Lars Ulrich

I do vaguely remembering seeing the whole thing once long time ago. If I remember correctly while Goofy is smoking, They are explaining how tough and rugged old cowboys were...So before goofy gets a swelled head he is wisked away...

The unedited version of the film is an extra on the DVD of Walt and El Grupo, a documentary on Walt Disney's good will trip to South America in 1941.
