Sound Effects are Terrible

I feel like the acting/storyline of this movie is mainly that of a drama/western. Then they go and add in these comic sound effects throughout that just don't make sense. The sound effects make you think it's a comedy, but it's not funny. The subject matter isn't funny. People die in this movie. It just seems like Hughes couldn't decide what he wanted it to be.

And don't get me started on Jane Russell's wardrobe which is straight out of modern day 1940s instead of the wild west of the 1800s. Is it believable that women would be wearing knee length skirts during the pioneer days?
