Did anyone else think...

That after Kit and Millie had their big fight, and Millie was no longer going to marry Gig Young (I forget his character's name!) that Kit and Preston were actually going to end up together? Because I really did! I know it actually worked out okay in the end, with the two friends 'back together', but to me Preston's engagement didn't seem at all real or interesting, and I just wanted him to finally get together with Kit!

I thought it was a definite possibility that they would get together... I much prefer the way it actually ended though. You don't see endings like this one very often! :-)

It was Kit that was going to marry Gig Young, not Millie. Kit is Bette Davis.

I love that the film stuck to the story which is the friendship between the two women rather than it turning into your run of the mill romantic happy endings between Kit and Preston.

I was hoping that Kit and Preston would end up together. I guess I'm a believer in "they lived happily ever after"

I think they two women end up old women living together, and then Bette Davis feeds Millie a baked rat. LOL....how insufferable was Millie??

I LOVE MILLIE! In the DVD featurette, someone describes her as the sort of friend "you put up with".

The movie would be kind of dreary without her : )

i agree- it ruined the movie that Kit and Preston didnt marry in the end. Why would Kit stay in her 'abusive' relationship with her friend Millie??? Ridiculous!

reply

For the reasons the character told Preston toward the end. I don't remember them all, but part of it was something along the lines of because Millie remembered Kit's childhood also, and the bit about Millie attaching herself to Kit on Kit's first day at a new school.

I completely agree. While this is a very good film, Kit and Preston ending up together would have made it a perfect one.

As for Kit and Preston....

Remember that ten years, perhaps eleven, actually, had passed since Preston left Millie and he and Kit parted. He referred to travelling in Mexico and South America, implying he did so to get over not only his divorce but Kit as well. The script also makes clear he's engaged to someone else, and very happy with her.

Meanwhile Kit has gotten involved with Rudd, who she seems quite fond of.

The point is that the passage of time together with encounters with other attractive people add up to their having "moved on" from what existed in the earlier period. What existed also did not include an actual romantic, sexual relationship that would have generated memories of being together. To the contrary they had already in that period NOT gotten involved, and having especially on Kit's part chosen that course, I doubt very much that she spent the subsequent years pining away for Preston. There is nothing to indicate she did, and again we instead see her getting involved with Rudd.

Now of course it is true that Kit does not end up with Rudd, and is left lonely, and available. But by then Preston has left the scene as it were, following his final fight with Millie. He has no reason at that moment to consider whether Kit might be available since as far as he knows she is still involved with Rudd. In fact Preston has no reason to think Kit has or might changed her mind about not getting involved with her best friend's former husband.

Given all that, it would have been implausible for Preston and Kit to get together.
