Jon Loder is a bad actor

I'm guessing you just finished watching it on TCM as well. You're right, he's not great. I hate to say it but sometimes I think Harrison Ford is that way also.

I enjoyed John Loder in this film. I think the part of Preston was supose to be a gentleman of the mid 20's, later in the film he relaxes and takes on a "George Brent" type of persona.

Actually I enjoyed his part. He came across as a really nice guy, a gentleman. The younger guy who intended to marry the Bette Davis character later on, reminded me a lot of Jon Loder's part.

I don't think he is necessarily a bad actor, but his character is kind of just "there". He is definitely dominated by Davis and Hopkins. It's their film, not his. So, he performed adequately. The part could have been filled by any man.
