Is this supposed to be slapstick funny?

The opening 30 minutes is pretty bad and Loretta Young is really bad. Not the humor shown in The Doctor Takes a Wife.

tries to be both a comedy and a who-dunnit...might have been better as a plain ol murder mystery.

missing the style of the Thin Man series...

It is a parody of a certain sort of crime movie, and it succeeds very well at that. It is very funny.

The Thin Man movies are serious crime dramas with a lot of humor. They're not parodies of the genre. Nick Charles is a serious, and very good, detective. Here we have a person thinking that he is a detective because he writes crime novels. This comedy is not "slapstick" funny; it is "parody" funny. For easy markup in Firefox & Opera, see http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/42255
