One question (spoiler)

I liked the film but the wraparound set-up/conclusion was a bit off for me.

We are set up with Day mourning for her lost love & the patrol cop is about to "save her," since he figures she is about to commit suicide or something. But, he's told not to worry. She is by now a fixture ... and he tells the story.

Since this wasn't billed as a drama or something, we figure Cary Grant survived from the start. But, the "Hard Swede" (as he is labeled in the credits here at IMDB -- the actor was also a favorite in "Farmer's Daughter") surely knows he did. At the end, Cary Grant -- via a trick coin -- lured to meet up with Day.

Why not save her the heartache etc. and let her know long before then that he was still alive? The only thing that comes to mind is that Cary Grant didn't think he was good enough for her, so didn't want her to see him again. But, she thinks he is dead. Does he know this and STILL not want to see her? If so, maybe, that would explain the trick (time was running out respecting their time at port and maybe Swede tried to convince him, but couldn't), but that's just supposition.

I think they should have either did away with the framing device or did it a bit better. The movie itself, including the rapping slang & the change of heart moment in the church, was very good. The t.v. show it inspired is on "ME TV" at times.
