After they were married I don't understand why, when they were both still so in love with each other, they carried on the charade of being married "in Name Only" and talking about the annulment and only after they realized the wall was gone they embraced?

In reality they were in love with each other but each thought that it might only be one sided so neither wanted to be first to admit that they loved the other. When they saw an opportunity to soothe each other's feelings they took it and nature took over.

So neither wanted to be foolish, or too emotionally vulnerable. So they went along with the charade, thinking it was the most practical thing to do. But of course Dingle couldn't have that...

Exactly. I think that must have weighed even more heavily on their minds. While we can be glad that Mr. Dingle's carpe diem approach to life provided the film with a short-term happy ending, who knows what happened to them after? It's not hard to see why Connie and Joe wanted to remain cautious.
