Why Did They Carry On The Charade?

After they were married I don't understand why, when they were both still so in love with each other, they carried on the charade of being married "in Name Only" and talking about the annulment and only after they realized the wall was gone they embraced?

They were both pretending to be willing to marry the other only to prevent a scandal (suggested by Mr. Dingle.) In reality they were in love with each other but each thought that it might only be one sided so neither wanted to be first to admit that they loved the other. When they saw an opportunity to soothe each other's feelings they took it and nature took over.

Thanks Den1 But what puzzles me is, since they both confessed their love for each other in bed that nite (And after that kiss, well, was there any doubt? LOL) , why did each think it was one sided?

They're both very practical people. After confessing their love for each other, they both glumly figured that it wouldn't work out having so much distance between them. And, well, when you look at the divorce rates post-World War II, that worry wasn't baseless.

So neither wanted to be foolish, or too emotionally vulnerable. So they went along with the charade, thinking it was the most practical thing to do. But of course Dingle couldn't have that...

More than that, I can't help thinking about the fact that he might not return to her at all. And this was the war-time reality for many couples then (well, and today I guess). That makes the happy end kind of bittersweet to me.

clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am...

Exactly. I think that must have weighed even more heavily on their minds. While we can be glad that Mr. Dingle's carpe diem approach to life provided the film with a short-term happy ending, who knows what happened to them after? It's not hard to see why Connie and Joe wanted to remain cautious.
