Me too! Just read the book... it's great! Plot is particularly relevant given recent political developments. Please email/post if you have access to the film.

I am also in search of a tape or dvd of this movie. Mr. Post was my uncle and I would very much like to have a tape or dvd. If you have been successful in locating one, please let me know. Thank you. [email protected]

I think everyone is looking for a tape or dvd of TMID. I'm told by tape and dvd distributors that the film has never been put on tape or disc. That makes sense because none of us can find it anywhere. But it also seems never to appear on television as it did years ago. Do we know who owns the original or where it is? Does anyone know that?

reply

I am on constant lookout here in Canada. I use the novel in my Grade 9 English class and would love to see it as a film. I ve been looking for years with no luck, but I ll let everyone know if I find it.

Yesterday, the literature and film class at Sam Houston State University held a screening of this film. Apparently, it hasn't been released on home video because one of Steinbeck's sons owns the rights to the story and for some reason or another doesn't seem to express any interest in releasing it such. Hopefully some day it will have a wide home video release, but if not, that's young Mr. Steinbeck's business.

I bought a used tape of this movie in 2001 on ebay. I suppose if it were copied on DVD and sold it would not violate any copyright laws since the tape does not prohibit making copies. I am going to copy it onto DVD and see how it comes out.

I got several inquires about Mandingo which I copied from tape to DVD. It was not protected. I would like to sell these along with some other movies which have not been released on DVD but am not an attorney and am unsure of copyright violations.

I've had many of my high school students read the book, but wish they and I could see the movie. Did the the DVD's work out???

reply

I think the reason they don't want to release it is that although the movie was supposed to be propaganda vs. the Germans, the movie is a bit soft on the Germans. This may actually be due to the U.S governments fault since they were involved in approving the tone of the movie.

This isn't the only Steinbeck adaptation film that has never been released on DVD or VHS. THE WAYWARD BUS, THE PEARL (1950 version), and THE FORGOTTEN VILLAGE are also unavailable and never-released, as far as I know.

It is interesting that you made the comment that the book was thought to be soft on the Germans. However, neither the movie or the book were soft on the Germans, the story was just realistic. It didn't portray the Germans as goose-stepping, dunderheads. Steinbeck caught hell for this when the book was released in the U.S. However, the readers of the copies that were secretly made & passed around the occupied countries received a boost in their morale because it was realistic. They felt that there was someone who understood their plight and that too gave them hope. While Americans wanted caricatures and "straw-man" figures to easily dismiss & feel superior to, those struggling to survive the occupation of the Nazis knew they were human.

If you want more info on this conception of the story being "soft" on Germans, read Donald Coers' book called "Steinbeck as Propagandist: The Moon is Down Goes to War." Dr. Coers has also written the introduction to the Penguins Classic publications of the book.

If you have students who read this book, make sure they read the introduction by Dr. Coers. It will give them a greater appreciation of the story and the author.

I laughed when I read "young Mr. Steinbeck." Do you know when John Steinbeck was born? His son must be in his 60s or 70s.
