Enjoy the Sublime Details, Not Much Story

Where else are you going to see the delightful old WWII version of the 'hully gully' called Palais Glide danced, or the musical tunes used as air ward warnings and another tune for 'all clear' (in this case Colonel Bogey's March). Gordon Jackson at his most youthful was quite endearing though if this was a David Lean film it would have been John Mills. I love when the old father of the two sisters left all alone to work as an air-raid warden comes home a bachelor's pigsty of a house - it was a funny comic turn. Surprising amount of talk about food (rumors of a 'bit of fish' for sale, tea with saccharine and women endlessly arguing about what to buy with their clothing coupons. Literally scores of great details fill this with authentic interest that make this worthwhile and solid. Not much story but a series of vignettes.

Its a simple propaganda film to boost morale. Its aged badly I am afraid.

Its that man again!!

Hey! It 75 years later and my morale can stand some boosting! it is 'aged' BECAUSE it is so full of details particular to its time which is why I enjoyed it.

reply

It has also aged because film technology has improved significantly. In the end an authentic and sincere ... yet unmemorable ... film about a time and place that is hard to imagine.
