Garbo

I did not know until recently that Garbo was originally slated to play the lead in this movie. Robert Osborne on TCM mentioned this after TCM aired "Two Faced-Woman" last week.

My understanding was "Madame Curie" originated at Universal as a vehicle for Irene Dunne. When Universal ran into financial difficulties in 1936 they sold a number of properties to MGM, including "Madame Curie," "The Great Ziegfeld" and remake rights to "Waterloo Bridge" and "Show Boat." When MGM acquired the story they announced it as a vehicle for Garbo, but Eve Curie, whose contract gave her star approval, thought Garbo was "too glamorous" and insisted that Greer Garson get the role.
