One of the few Horrors i really like!

This is my favourite Horror Movie ever. And this is a genre that I don't usually find so interesting. The scene were Betsy and the zombie are walking thru the cornfield have haunted me for years (after only ONE viewing).
So beautiful and so poetic. Val Lewtons vision together with Jacques Tourneurs directing are one of the best moviemaking pair of our time.

Does anyone agree?

I just finished watching the movie for the very first time. As you said, it's beautiful and poetic. The cornfield scene is so haunting, but lovely.
I adore horror/thriller movies that have a beautiful artistic quality to them, much like The Eyes Without A Face.

airhead baby89,

I'm kicking back at home watching Lewton night too, not that I intended to. I OWN them all, for God's sake, and need to be doing other things, but I let Lewton's brilliance suck me in!

I hope you're now a Lewton convert. I highly recommend "Cat People", "The Body Snatcher" and "Bedlam".

reply

I even got my Mom hooked on them XD
It's a shame he didn't make more films, they have almost a early Hitchcock quality to them...or something like that.
I loved, loved, loved, loved "The Body Snatcher"

> walking thru the cornfield

Just a minor nitpick:

I believe that it is supposed to be a sugar cane field. (After all, that is what is stated to be the crop grown at the plantation.)

reply

I was wrong. It was so many years ago, I'm sorry for the misconvinience.

I haven't seen this one yet (waiting for my Val Lewton collection to arrive--Amazon has it on sale until tomorrow for cheap), but if you like poetic, beautiful horror films, you should check out The Haunting (1963). It was directed by Robert Wise, who worked with Lewton on The Body Snatcher years earlier. It's a gorgeous film.

I'm not a horror or zombie fan, but this was not really either. A beautiful movie, with good sets and good acting! It was something like a tropical "Jane Eyre." I was really expecting a lot of Bela Lugosi-style crap, and was pleasantly surprised.

reply

The title could be misleading, it could make people think it is one of those duff badly written, badly acted horrors made during that time that normally starred Bela Lugosi when he was past his best instead of what it really is a superb, haunting and intelligent movie.

Life isn't a rehearsal, so make this one your best performance

Sensationalist titles like "Cat People", "The Leopard Man", and "I Walked with a Zombie" were foisted upon an unwilling Val Lewton by the powers-that-be at RKO Studios. One of the challenges Lewton faced was having to conceive story lines for his movies that transcended such cheesy titles, while at the same time adhering to the premise of them. Considering such a context, it makes Lewton's artistic achievements all the more remarkable.

I couldn't understand most of the plot and the stereotypes were a bit annoying...but it was haunting.

I know that's how it's listed in the description but I wouldn't exactly call this a horror movie. There's basically one zombie in it and she's just doing her zombie thing; not really threatening anyone. Okay, maybe there were two. The guy with the weird eyes was a bit menacing but it was targeted toward the other zombie.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

Same here! Last night, I re-watched this great movie for the third of fourth time, and I was expecting that particular scene since the very beginning! It's very simple yet beautiful, and the atmosphere and suspense are awesome.
