Original Ending

Is it true that the ending was forced by the producers? Is there an original ending? Does anyone know what is it?

reply

I don't know if the ending was forced by the producers but IT IS TRUE that there was an original ending that I have seen when the movie was first released.
After His Excellency tells the lift operator to go UP (Heaven) the elevator stops at the next floor and a glamorous woman walks in. The lift operator asks "up or down?" and the lady says "down". The lift operator looks at Henry Van Cleve like asking "what shall I do now?" and the incorregible Henry Van Cleve shrugs his shoulders and says "It's ok, Heaven Can Wait."
Maybe the "second cut right" allowed some religiose censor to spoil the original ending, most likely againts Lubitsch will, but the fact is that the original ending was consistant with the whole story and the current ending is not. And it is also a shame that the original version of the movie can not be found anywhere.

Sorry, but I don't believe this "supposed" ending. This movie was a 1943 or so movie. When did you see this "supposed" original ending? How old were you in 1943? I think the name of the movie and ending were exactly perfect.

How would the title make any sense but for the ending posted?

Oh, that is so much better.

OK, I went through the extras on the Criterion disk (interview with the screenwriter and then a talk by critics) and no one mentioned an alternate ending.

This was one of the ending that was written and shot. But it was never used. Samson Raphaelson and Lubitsch thought this ending was wrong. So they never used it.

They were right. Due to the times in 1943, a nice, uplifting ending was a better choice for the movie audience then.

On a side note, Don Ameche was great in this part. I think he was wonderful in everything I've seen him in. Gene Tierney was simply gorgeous.

I just recently watched this on Fox Movie Channel for the second time and honestly I remember seeing the original ending the first time I watched it. I feel like I'm not making this up?

He says earlier at the bookstore "if I met you on an elevator I would make it stop between the floors". So that is the most plausible ending....
