A Guy Named Joe?

Can anyone tell me...who is the Joe the title refers to? I'm a huge Richard Dreyfuss fan, and love the movie "Always." I knew it was a remake of an earlier film, and recently was lucky enough to find "Joe" on cable. Loved it, too. But I'm wondering who Joe is? I did miss the very beginning, so if there was a reference to a guy named Joe, I missed it. Can anyone answer this bit of trivia?

In the very beginning of the movie a group of British children are watching Pete fly in and when he lands they debate over calling him over to talk to them. The children have a conversation and one states that all pilots will answer to the name Joe. Only time I know it is mentioned.

Irene Dunne makes a reference just prior to Spencer Tracy's fatal mission saying that she had that "same feeling she had when Joe Bailey got it" describing the foreboding she had about another ill fated mission.

This is the first time I have seen this in many many years and it's still on, so maybe there's another reference like that.

All soldiers in a long conflict tend to become names, dough boys, limeys, krauts, Nips many Germans were Hans or some other Germany name.

Kilroy was here.

In Bob Hope's My Favorite Brunette he is trying to escape from the cops. He runs into an apartment building rings all the buzzers and says hey babe it's me Joe and they all buzz him in. He quips to the audience I have to remember this address.

I am sadden that topic this even came up.

Excellent response. I'd add that by using the name 'Joe' the filmmakers could imply a greater connection to all serving men who were taken away either temporarily or permanently from those they loved. It was interesting to read that US government censors rejected the script because of its perceived potential to upset families.

It's on TCM at the moment. it is such a gem - both of its time but also so timeless. Beautiful.
