The Gang's All Here (1943)

Does anyone know why this film--Busby Berkeley's greatest--remains unreleased in any format? Rights issue? Any resolution forthcoming?

reply

I have been trying to find this movie myself for a couple of years now. I still can't find out what is going on. Whatever it is, I hope they resolve it soon.

I don't know why it hasn't been released, but I for one would love to have a copy of it. It never seems to play on any of the oldies tv channels like TCM or AMC.Of course I work alot and have little time for tv so it is possible that I just haven't caught it. But I would love to find it on DVD or even VHS.

It's actually playing for a week in NYC at Film Forum as part of a double bill with Siodmak's COBRA WOMAN starting August 12. It's a ridiculously rare print from the original Technicolor negatives. It's on their calendar, so it's definitely not a rights issue. http://www.filmforum.org

Thanks for the tip. The rights issue I refer to is for DVD or VHS where it's never been issued.

According to Leonard Maltin's movie review book, this movie was availible only on the laserdisc format. I have been unable to find a copy or any evidence that it ever was released on laserdisc, however. I taped the movie about 12 years ago on AMC, and I still watch it from time to time.

Definately needs to be released on DVD!!

Yes, it was issued on Laserdisc; read a review on the Web. Release was back in 1995 and I'm told it sometimes turns up used. No luck so far.

Fox Movie Channel shows it regularly. The next scheduled showing is 21 Feb 06.
Why not just tape it?

I've just been watching "The Gang's All Here" on DVD. The dance numbers are amazing. I got it as part of a box set called "Hollywood Musicals" which include "Daddy Long Legs", "On the Avenue" and more from the 1940s I'd never heard of before but enjoyed just the same.

Let's update this thread, because things have changed greatly since it began.

'The Gang's All Here' IS on DVD now, in a very handsome presentation with a boatload of extras. Several posters here wondered what was keeping this movie off home video; the answer is: A crying need for restoration. Since 'The Gang's All Here' was made in three-strip Technicolor, and since the clarity, richness and splendor of that process was integral to the movie's concept and since DVD faithfully reproduces every flaw, it would seem that Fox's decision to put off a release until it could be done right was the correct one. The restored picture is breathtaking; the movie probably didn't look and sound this good in most of its 1943 first-run engagements. One of the extras shows the 'before and after' of the restoration, clearly demonstrating the difference between a watchable image and one returned to "first day" Technicolor splendor.

So, if you want this movie on video, it's out there, and it's not the movie you remember - it's better.
