Lugosi was never ideal for the Universal style Monster.

Someone both bulkier and younger was always more logical.

Thing is, I think he could have been great as The Monster of the Novel. The intellectual Monster who quotes Paradise Lost and waxes philosophical. Which we've still never seen justice done to.

I feel the same about Christopher Lee actually, in fact that's part of why I included him in this casting thread of mine.

I agree that Lugosi never had the right look for the monster, but not because he needed to be bulkier. Karloff was rail thin and it gave his monster a nice gaunt appearance. The "bulk" was lots of padding. Lugosi's face was too "jowly" (some might say the same about Chaney).

I've always wished Glenn Strange had started playing the monster in FMTWM.

i guess you can say all these fellas were originally cast properly and the sequels are kind of messy, but according to the bonus material i saw on the wolf man double dvd, they wanted these "exotic europeans" as they describe it in their movies, it was common man lon chaney jr who had a problem getting work. as long as they're gonna make a goofy combined monster movie, why not throw in more of the monsters, i think the mummy and frankenstein's bride never appeared in one of these gatherings, of course the creature from the black lagoon hadn't even made appearance of his first movie by this time. i really wish bela lugosi had a speaking part, as it is now you just think right behind the monster is bela lugosi. notice how some shots look like something out of a western movie, and it's so obviously miniature buildings by the end you know what will happen. i think in all these "monster meet monster" movies they just repeat the plot of the original monster flick and have a monster fight at the end, not even the titles make sense, this should clearly have put more emphasis on the wolf man.

grown accustomed as you say goodbye,
urging for your lovin charms to stay around,
where i can escape the hostile,
as your magic vanish,
im back out in middle of nowhere,

revealin the invisible man,

Yeah. The title makes it sound like Frankenstein's Monster would be a main character but he's not really in it that much. The posters and traielrs weren't honest either since they all featured the Monster who isn't even in it much.

To put it mildly! Not nearly big enough for one thing. They shouldn't
have edited out the dialogue that provided continuity from the last film.

I thought Lugosi played an excellent monster. To me though, the best Frankenstein Monster was played by Sam McMurray in The Munsters Christmas movie
