Underappreciated Lost Classic

A few years ago, a friend gave me his copy of this film. This is a true underappreciated classic epic with great performances especially Paxinou's supporting turn. It is a bit dated and perhaps that explains its low rating compared to other so-called classics of this day. Still, its effect is there. Anyone else agree?

I just saw it on DVD and liked it very much. Especially the beautiful Technicolor pictures. The reason this movie is underrated is most likely the fact that it is rarely broadcasted on tv, probably because of the length: 170 minutes. It does, however, stand out between the classics of Hollywood's Golden Era.

I agree completely. There are other threads from othe IMDB people who watched it and then didn't like it. Incredible. It was an huge project for 1943 (during WWII) and really puts the hook in you.

Love and sacrifice. Beauty and pain. And we are all mortal, not matter how precious life is...the themes of the book come thru the movie vividly for me.

I think this movie may have kind of been suppressed after World War 2 because some people (especially certain elites) didn't like the political undertones about left vs. right, even though they hardly feature in the movie compared to the book.

This was one of the better Hemingway adaptions for screen. I haven't seen it in years, but I remember it captured the atmosphere of the book pretty well.

It's awesome.

People who love Ingrid Bergman would never overlook this classic. It's a great film even though she doesn't do much in the first act.
