In What Language Did EH Write This Novel?

I could not get through the English original because Hemingway makes his characters talk a strange jargon that hardly resembles normal English; I had to switch instead to a Spanish translation that made better sense.

I'm pretty sure Hemingway only wrote in English. His style was pretentious and over-mannered; a lot of Americans don't care for Hemingway's writing style. I believe he has fallen out of favor in recent decades. When I was in college in the 1980s, he was already less popular than he had been while he was alive. I've never liked Hemingway.

Only an ignoramous would ask what language H wrote but in many of his novels he tries to give his characters the flavor of the language in particular Spanish here and Italian in Farewell to Arms. It comes off as odd. In his short stories set in America he is a great prose stylist only PC has diminished his reputation

jimboreynolds-960-289779: Enjoyed the movie (IMDB*10) far better then reading the book. It was mandatory in our High School (late 1960s) American Literature course. Did not care for the written works of Hemingway nor F. Scott Fitzgerald. They seemed to much of their time, though liked the works of Steinbeck and Twain.

As I recall We read eight (8) books over the year, each was proceeded by watching the movie. We then had to write a composition referencing both. As We had 50" periods it usually took two or three days to just to get through the movie.
