are u that stupid? the orginal book For Whom The Bell Tolls was writting by ernist hemingway way before metallica even exsisted...your so stupid

reply

Hey i was joking by the way, i know about the Hemmingway novel. I was just annoyed that i missed it on TV (it was on 3 hours before i realised itwas on so i missed it

reply

I seriously doubt you were. It sounds like you're just trying to save face. I'm not judging, it's just easier to be honest. If you havn't done so yet, reading the book is well worth your time. Also, Metallica claims that there isn't supposed to be anything in common with the book. By the way, it's also my favorite Metallica song. I registered with imdb just because I saw your comment...I almsot blew a fuse.

reply

no i was joking, hence the smiley at the end of the "nuff sed"

btw its my fave metallica song aswell

reply

me toooooooooo lol that song is amazing

reply

I like this song so much it got me kicked out of Ohio University for a quarter! My roommate and I had several beverages and then played For Whom the Bell Tolls as loud as a 100 watt pioneer receiver would go at 3 in the morning. The assorted officials that showed up had to break the door because we couldn't hear them knocking!

reply

HAHA!! i have been putting off making an account until i saw that subject too. i was like "WHO IS THIS MORON??" and i HAD to register to read it

reply

I don't know, calling someone "stupid" sounds pretty "judging" to me.

Fighting for Truth, Justice, and making it the American way.

reply

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" is also my favorite Metallica song, I've always wondered if they've gotten the title from this movie, I've actually seen parts of this movie before I've heard of the Metallica tune

reply

John Milton - "Never send to know for whom the bell tolls - it tolls for thee."

reply

you mean John Donne bitttttccchhhhhh

reply

It's John Donne, not John Milton. I

reply

I'm not a Metallica fan, but I really like Hero of the Day. It has a nice uplifting melody. No smiley icon, I'm serious.

Love's turned to lust and blood's turned to dust in my heart.

reply

Are you so stupid that you don't know the difference between YOUR and YOU'RE ?

reply

Plus the FILM was made way before Metallica existed too.

reply

Any Hemmingwhey scholar knows where the title came from. The Pennsylvania Turnpike was the first major four-lane highway in America, and charged tolls.
Hemmingwhey was travelling from New Jersey to Pittsburgh over the pike. As he approached the tollbooths he'd hear bells clanging as the keepers accepted fares and raised the gates. Being dyslexic, instead of thinking "toll bells" he thought "bell tolls." Doing quick research he came upon John Donne's famous quote. The rest is history.
Metallica found the same quote in the public domain and added it to their song.

reply

You try whey, whey too hard! :-)

reply

yo a'cans are the most undereducated folks conceivable
fhtbt was by j donne, not hummingway, nor *beep*

reply

Know it was originally from Donne, but Hemingway swiped it for the title of his novel. Us a'cans are good at such recycling.

reply

also the film came out in 1943 ; none of the band were even alive !!!

r u 2? y u zzz ltr 2 rit? Is there something wrong with your fingers, or don't you know how to spell 'you'?

Don't get me wrong -- it looks *beep* awesome, and you must be a very sophisticated person.

reply

Actually, Hemingway used the title from a famous quote by John Donne (who died in the 17th Century, by the way) "No man is an island, entire of itself;... and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

reply

Dont worry smitbar, I noticed the smiley face and caught on to the joke...

reply

I guess the "stupid" ones are you that did not understand he was joking.

reply

haha

Let me start by saying that Metallica is my favorite band of all times, though their older stuff is by far more metal genius than anything written after ReLoad.
Nothing about your post is funny, joking or not, it doesn't even make sense.
I would bet money that Ernest Hemingway, James, Lars, Kirk, Cliff, Jason and Robert would all agree that you are a certifiable moron and an insult to their fan base. Metallica recorded Ride the Lightning in 1984. Ernest Hemingway, author of "For Whom the Bell Tolls", was born in 1899 and he died in 1961, one year before any of the members of Metallica were even born. He wrote the Novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls" in 1940, and the movie was made in 1943. The smiley face at the end of your post doesn't prove that you're not an idiot, nor does it prove that you were joking.

Haha, lesson learned: Never joke on IMDb message boards. You make one little remark and then everyone takes you seriously.

reply

ive learnt my lesson. i shud b shot for trying to make ppl laugh lol

reply

made me laugh... but not quite as much as the guy about 4 posts up who did all kinds of research to show how much smarter than you he apparently is... hehehe

Treachery is the way of the Sith.

reply

Man... you guys gotta lay off Smitbar. I dind't find the original post funny, either, but you know what? If I had a quarter for every hit-and-miss joke I've made in my life, I'd be able to retire today I bet.
He's neither an idiot nor a moron... just has a warped sense of humor. "Guilty is not he who spills his wine on the table, but he who brings light upon it" - loosely translated from Russian. Nicely said, though, Smit - "I shud b shot for trying to make ppl laugh."

Well rooty-toot-toot.

Talk about being anal.

Hey Smitt!
Its Emma. Dudes, he WAS joking, he's a drama student with me and his sense of humour is sometimes hard to catch, BELIEVE ME!
But yeah he was joking and to all those people who meticulously researched into this, you all REALLY need to loosen up and get a sense of humour.

reply

For whom the bell tolls. Time marches on, for whom the bell toooooollsss... Listening to it right now. Not that I've ever seen the movie.

Last movie watched: About A Boy: 7/10

reply

at first glance I was like what?!? he has to be joking...but then again...there are some people who are idiots so I just wanted to see the post for sure and I knew there would be people who would call him an idiot...

reply

Wait! You mean that the the novel isn't named after the Metallica song? Next thing you will tell me is that Ecclesiastes didn't get the quote about "the sun also rises" from Hemingway!

(Only for serious Hemingway fans to get.)

reply

I think the metallica song was written after, but I'm not sure. Are they in the movie???

reply

no, their scenes were shot but cut from the final movie in the last stages of production.

This thread was totally worth the click.

🎍Season's greetings!🎅🌲

reply

let's stop bickering and accept that the book is awesome! the film from what I heard is ok, but Gary Cooper is quite bad in it.

Is this so?

reply

Yes.

reply

[deleted]

Metallica *beep* sucks.

reply

I figured that it was meant to be a joke, but it was a stupid joke and it made you look like an idiot, no matter what your intentions were.

reply

Jeez... Some people need to lighten up.

reply

The people that didn't know it was a joke need a their head's kicked in.
