Poor Betty Field

I certainly doesn't help, during her "homely face" phase, that she is followed around by a studio light on her face shining from below, vampire style. It always cracks me up :-) I was glad they turned it off when Robert Cummings showed up :-)

reply

Yeah, that's all they did to make her look less attractive... create the effect of deep shadows under her eyes. Pretty silly. :P Oh, and less lipstick. Hideous! ;)

The movie "Enchanted Cottage", starring Dorothy McGuire and Robert Young, does a much better job with a similar theme.

reply

Thanks for the tip, it's arrived today and I can't wait to find out why Robert Young's face is disfigured in that way...

reply

Your welcome! What did you think of the movie? (Sorry I haven't checked back until now.)

reply

Oh yeah, and the way her hair is pulled back tight enough to cut off her circulation. ow. Why, Miss Murgatroyd, with your glasses off you're beautiful!

You've got me?! Who's got you?!

reply

If they insisted on using Betty Field, then why not distort her face a bit Lon Chaney style, or at least be a bit more creative with makeup? She was gorgeous before acquiring the mask, looking even better than the girl who made fun of her.

That story always haunted me for years, it was so well-done! Fields gave a splendid performance, she truly became two different women.

This is my fave sequence of the film, mainly because of Field's performance. But
I also love the carnival atmosphere (and a super young Perter Lawford in a
one-line bit part), and the way everyone is hidden behind masks. A sadly
forgotten film.
