5 GRAVES TO CAIRO...HUH???!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!
I started to watch this on TCM and could barely make it past the first 45 minutes; so I saved it on the DVR and will go back to it......Am I missing something? what the hell is it about?
Anne Baxter is hilarious with her half German, half French accent; at least I think that's what she's trying to do!
Don't get me wrong: I like Wilder's movies; well, except for Stalag 17...yuk!!
Maybe it's just me, but so far of what I've seen of FGTC, I am not impressed......I will, though, tough it out and chain myself to my chair and MAKE myself watch the rest of it.....maybe something'll click for me if I see the rest of it...
I hope those of you who really like this film will go easy on me!!!!! Just one man's opinion....
OH YES...another film I didn't 'get'....Casablanca.....all my life I've seen clips, read about it, etc.....finally saw it........ok, it was pretty good, but I fail to see the iconic status this film has generated!!!!!!!!!!!!
Again, just one man's opinion!!!!!!!!!!

I watched the whole thing last night, and it's OK but nothing to get too worked up over. The main problem I had was with Franchot Tone. When he was being himself and not the spy/waiter, he was just stupid and obnoxious. If I was that French woman, I would've fed him to the Germans on a platter. I'm glad Tom Neal beat the crap out of this guy in real life.

Stick to films like "Porky's", or "Dude, Where's My Car?". Such films will require less of you than Casablanca or Stalag 17.

Hey Capitain,

Just kill yourself. I love Casablanca as much as the next person but what is wrong with Porky's? For what it was trying to be, it was very successful. Don't be a snob

reply

"...what's wrong with Porky's?" If you have to ask you probably won't understand the answer. Don't be a crybaby.

Yeah I can see the desperate attempts to decipher Casablanca & Stalag are really taking their toll on the mind of this good ol' buffoon of a Captain here.

As for Cairo, it's a reasonable little piece of suspenseful distraction overrun by heavy handed war time propaganda. Worth a rating of 6/10 or so.

What a pompous thing to say!

I love Casablanca ... Stalag 17 is OK (interesting cast) ... FGTC is BAD and seriously outdated.

I think the story was fine, the acting was okay, the directing was mediocre but I think it was the editing and story cohesion that actually sucked.

Many things annoyed me like how loudly Bramble, Mouche and or Farid would talk while in their room as though there was no one around to be concerned about - only crawling with Nazis who would execute you in a New York Minute if they overheard what you said. Another was the ridiculous demeanor of Rommel partying and sharing information with prisoners as well as having intimate conversations about his strategies with (someone he thought was) a spy. No one in their right mind tells a spy anything because they could be caught behind enemy lines the next day and talk. It wasn't a bad film but it certainly wasn't one Wilder would have listed first on his resume.

How could you have watched nearly half this movie and ask "what the hell is it all about?" It sounds like you weren't paying attention very well, since the plot is pretty simple. Seems rather unfair to only watch half a movie and then pan it.

Did you ever go back and finish watching it?

reply

Thought it was great. I gave it a 10.

reply

Stalag 17 - Well, I just can't imagine how anyone can fail to see the brilliance there?
Weird innit.
