What 's with that Pearl Harbor amputee?

Is that guy supposed to be a "war hero"? I'm sorry the fellow lost his legs, but heroes don't behave that way. Margaret O'Brien displayed more manly fortitude in fighting off her deadly infection than that sap did, with his sulking, refusing his girlfriend's letters and collapsing to the floor in self-pity.

I think he was just bitter at the loss of his legs, and even his girlfriend showed understand in her letters, I'm assuming he was afraid she would change her mind when she saw him. It was a pretty common theme in WWII movies like "Best Years of Our Lives" and "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo." Like in Best Years of Our Lives, Wilma was standing there telling Homer she loved him but he kept pushing her away because he didn't want to put her through the trials of having a husband with no arms. :)

If he took a tour of a VA hospital he would be counting his lucky stars. He would find out there are worse things for a man to lose than his legs. There are folks running and playing sports on artificial legs these days. Come to think of it, if I had to lose something, my legs would be the first to go!

But that was almost 70 years ago. You can't compare today to then.
