WOW!!!!!! I musta missed something. World War Eleven!!!????? Just joking with ya. I know what you meant. Great movie. I love the speach Boleslavski gives about the man, John Paul Jones and his Revolutionary War victory over the HMS Serapis when the crew wanted transfers. Very inspiring.

Actually, Glenn Ford was an enlisted man in the Marine Corps during WWII. After the war he was commissioned in the naval reserve and eventually retired as a Captain.

I am confused about his timeline then. Did the Marines loan him out for moviemaking, or did he make this before his December 1942 enlistment date, so it was released in '43?

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

Then, in the midst of making another war drama - Destroyer - with Edward G. Robinson, an ardent anti-Fascist, Glenn impulsively volunteered for the United States Marine Corps Reserve on December 13, 1942. The startled studio had to beg the Marines to give their second male lead four more weeks in order to complete shooting.[9]
