What is up with the tiny car?

The car's appearances were like Alfred Hitchcock making his presence known in a film, but to no (discernable) plot purpose.

Maybe the car was explained in some conversation....if so, I missed it.

Anyway, delightful movie. A true 1940's Confection....with fine actors.

PS I thought of a possible explanation....the studio men (after a liquid lunch) had bought the tiny car and had to get SOME use out of it to explain the expense.

Ha....

The car is a Crosley, which I assume the point of was the fact that it got very good fuel mileage in a time when gasoline was being rationed due to the war. Milland's character makes a reference to "having an extra pint of gasoline" when he offers Tony a ride home.

My dad used to sell Crosley's. The Crosley hotshot was a tiny sportscar.
