Average Film, and Average War Film

This film is nothing special. Even when it was made, it was probably old-fashioned or cliche, or both. The love story between the Tyrone Power and Anne Baxter characters went on far too long, and lessened the tension that could have been created between the Tyrone Power and Dana Andrews characters.

The one interesting thing about the film is to see a Black man serving with an all-white navy crew. Did that really happen during the Second World War? Anyway, it was surprising that the Black character was presented with dignity in 1943. I do not even remember any reference made about his color in the film apart from when the white crew had to darken their faces. Remarkable for an American 1943 film.

I am sure there are better navy or submarine films made during or about the Second World War. Can members recommend any?

Thanks in advance.

The German film Das Boot is the gold standard for submarine films. But I need not tell you that ... not when you have the power of the Google in your hands. More so check out the lists here on IMDB.
