Do you like the final gag?

I've always thought the final gag, where Daffy's inattentive reflection in the water gets separated from him and bumps into a rock before realizing what's happened, is dumb.

It's always struck me as weirdly irrelevant and unfunny. Anyone agree? Anyone want to rip my head off for such a sacreligious notion?

Yeah, it's more weird than funny. But coming up with a good closing gag was always rough on the gag men.

Hi, silver hum!

I hope he doesn't act like the ape in Gorilla My Dreams when the she-ape brings home Bugs Bunny as her new baby.

I'm glad he went to heaven. Is it his fault he has to eat?

I don't imagine he'll need to eat in heaven. And yeah, he has that harp. And the balloon to play with.

Like my new sig? It's Buster Keaton-ish.

I changed it back. People might get the wrong impression if I stare stonily at them.

So, really, everything turned out well for everyone in the second segment. The first segment ended with only Bugs happy.

I wonder what this cartoon would have been like if Robert Clampett had done what he really wanted to do, which was make a half-hour special. Can you imagine?

Sixty-four years. Wow. Does it seem that old? Does it seem old at all? So many cartoons from the 70s, 80s and even 90s seem ancient, while this cartoon--dated references and all--could have been made yesterday.

I wish Clampett could have made the cartoon he wanted to. (He also wanted to make a long version of his other Disney spoof: Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs.) If today's cartoon makers tried to make a new Fantasia parody with Bugs Bunny et al, it would bomb. All the attempts to bring back the classic characters have failed: including box office successes like Space Jam.

Oh, well. We'll always have the classic shorts.

"The Transformers" does look awful now, doesn't it? So does everything else made around that time, especially "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." That one could have been made in the 20s for all it has stood up to time--and Gertie the Dinosaur still looks better.

Do you ever see the junky 1970s Hanna-Barbera cartoons on Boomerang--like "Josie and the Pussycats" and "Jabberjaw"? Unbearable. "Scooby-Doo, Where are You?" is still a good cartoon, despite the bad animation and repetitive scripts. Scooby and Shaggy are great characters.

"Underdog" is amusing. "Rocky and Bullwinkle" is an excellent comedy that used its limitations of time and money to excellent advantage. The limited animation makes the material funnier than it already is.

"Beany and Cecil" is another good one. This series was both a puppet show and a cartoon series. Both are difficult but not impossible to find on video. I don't know about DVD. I haven't checked. But these TV cartoons are worth checking out.
