Was she supposed to be....

dim witted? I don't get how a grown woman acts this way.

reply

No. She was just 18 and very naive. Take a look at the year it was made (1943). There was a lot more innocence then than there is now. Also, she was an only child and doted upon by her mother who she was very afraid to lose. She's even ditzier (more exasperating, too) in the book.

"She's even ditzier in the book." Hard to imagine, as she was
borderline retarded in the film. I'm sorry, I love Dorothy McGuire,
but this film was a tedious yawn-fest. From the moment it starts to
its sudsy conclusion, it's non-stop talky tedium. I was very, very
disappointed in this plotless, tiresome mess. Truly awful.

I totally agee. Zero empathy for the feelings of her husband and his point of view. Selfiish and selfcentered.
