One Thing I Don't Get ...

His wife has been having an affair right along but refuses to divorce him and acts like there is nothing he can do about it.

I don't think proving her infidelity would be that difficult.

Right? Wasn't it easier for a man to file/ get a divorce back in the day?

Before 1948, when Ronald Reagan, as Governor of California, passed the first no-fault divorce law, one had to site reasons. It's possible that the doctor thought nobody would believe his reasons...that his wife was cheating. Apparently, she was good at lying and covering, so to the outside world she might have been seen as the loving wife. Although, how she went out with all these men without people knowing, I don't know. However, before cell phones, social media, and cameras on every corner, it was a bit easier to do.
