in defence of this movie.

Over all it was an intresting movie. Would like to see the whole thing next time it was on TV. I bounced around the stations and kept comming back finally stoped channel surfing to watch the rest of the movie. Intresting thought was if they remade it they could replace the Jap's with the Iraqs and updated the story to reflect what is going on in the world today.

There is more Gravy about you then the Grave. Scrooge.

Watching it now on TCM as part of their Memorial Day weekend salute to our war dead.

It is a really good flag waver, and must be viewed from the perspective of what was going on in the US and all over the world in WWII. Many people today can't conceive of the idea of an all-out war in which EVERY American was deeply involved and every American who lived during those years had his life changed forever because of it.

The special effects of the planes firing at each other was excellent.

Every American? Really?

So, in concern to this film -- Japanese Americans were doing what in 1943? Well, let's see: on the West Coast and parts of Central US they were effectively imprisoned and while 2.5 million black Americans served during the war most of them were treated like servants and were mainly segregated. Chinese Americans would have been a big help during the war, and while millions lived in the US during that time period only about 14,000 were allowed to serve.

I think you mean: every "white" American. And even then, probably not especially since they had the draft during WWII.

Yes, every American who lived during WWII had their life completely changed by the war.

I'm glad that TCM is showing the WWII flag waver movies on Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day is a time when Americans honor those who died in all the country's wars. Even though some choose to be offended by it.

reply

No, they didn't.
