Question about 1943 Batman

I purchased the 1943 Batman serial as soon as it was released on VHS by Goodtimes back around 1990 or 1991, and I liked it right away. However, something has always puzzled me. A few months before I got this series, I had watched a Batman documentary called Batmania, which was how I first learned of the 1943 serial. This documentary had several clips from the 1943 serial, and I was surprised to see Bam! and Pow! on the screen when they were fighting, and it clearly looked like vintage footage and not something that had been added on the video. Does anybody know if there are actual episodes in existence of the 1943 Batman serial with the Bam! and Pow! captions onscreen? Is it possible that they were made like that for the Evening With Batman and Robin re-issue just prior to the introduction of the Adam West TV Series?

The trailer you saw was re-edited in 1966 to promote the serials wide release to theaters, capitalizing on the Adam West TV show. The original trailer doesn't have any superimposed sound effects.

Ironically, the serial had been shown in limited release in Dec 1965 (about a month before Batman debuted on ABC) after successful showings by Hugh Hefner at one of his clubs where the audience was encouraged to cheer the heroes and boo the villains.

the pow!s were added to the 1943 clips just for fun in the documentary - never really there originally.
