Interesting story. - EastCoastMariner
Indeed it was--thanks for posting it.
My ex-wife's uncle was in the Merchant Marine during World War Two. His tanker was attacked and sunk by a German U-Boat off the coast of Trinidad. (Coincidentally, my father grew up in Trinidad during the war.) His life was saved once when, as he was trapped below deck while the ship sank, the boiler exploded and shot him to the surface. His life was saved again when the U-Boat picked him up and dropped him off in Trinidad, from where he made his way back to the United States; unlike the man in your story, he did not refuse the Germans' help.
Back in the States, he was asked to go on a speaking tour, describing his experiences. However, when he was instructed to be sure to describe the Germans as being barbarians, he refused, citing how he had in fact been rescued by the Germans (albeit the same ones who had sunk his ship), and he stated that he would in fact mention this in his talk. He was then excused from the speaking tour.
