The girls needed to get a life.

I realize this was the '40's and girls depended more on marriage than they do today, but come on! These girls (Cecy and Lita) are pathetic! They sit around singing songs about being old maids. They could get a job or go to college, or even do volunteer work, but what do they do all day? Exactly. Or to be even more frank, they could defy their father and marry their boyfriends anyway - they were adult women, they don't need Daddy's permission for anything.

It went along with the plot. The father believed the girls should be married in order of age.

Yeah, it's definitely silly, but I think it's intended to be a gentler riff on "The Taming of the Shrew" in that respect.
