SHE IS NOT GOING TO MARRY THAT 'YOUNG MAN'!

These old Hollywood movies are great but certain times give me a slight 'eeeeew' factor. Regarding lovely Rita Hayworth's character her father (played by Adolphe Menjou and is 52 years old)swears, "She is not going to marry that YOUNG MAN!!" regarding Fred Astaire. I checked on IMDB and Astaire was already 43 years old at the time of this movie. 'Young Man'? Good Lord, he's only 9 years younger than her Dad. Hayworth is stunningly beautiful and only 24 & I find it slightly strange she likes this middle aged geezer? I guess it's because he dances so darn good & she can make him Oatmeal? Reminds me of the movie 'The Misfits' (which is a good movie also) Clark Gable who is 60 years old wins Marilyn Monroe (who is 34) Wow, a difference of 26 years.. eeeeewww he could be her Dad or better yet her GrandFather maybe. allright, I know, I know, it's old Hollywood but there must be others that have contemplated this. I did a little math and this age difference would be exactly the same as Val Kilmer marrying Rue McClanahan....?? I just spit something up, gotta go LOL

You must be very young.

Just wait a few years, and your perceptions will change as you age.

Sorry, other side of the fence. LOL. I'm 53. I'm not trying to be preachy about it. Maybe it's because I have a young daughter and two teenage sons. All I know is when my 'little girl' (at age 24) brings home a 43 yr. old dude I'm not going to be real happy about the guy showing up.

i'm 23 and i have to say if i could find a guy like fred astaire i wouldn't care how old he was, from what i know of my mother she wouldn't mind either she's always telling me i should be looking for an older man...

It's not like it doesn't mirror real life...

Everyone gushes on about the fabulous Hollywood romance of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, but people forget that he was 44 and she 19 when they started their relationship. That's 25 years; Calista Flockhart is 22 years younger than Harrison Ford.

It's not the age, it's the mileage. If a woman is 25 years older than a man, or vice-versa, or if they're only 10 minutes apart in age it matters not. What matters is that they love each other. That's all.

Real life....in Hollywood. Know anyone personally with a 10+ year age difference? Probably not. It's not the norm and is a small percentage, yet according to the movies it happens more often than not, as a product of a shoehorning an older, established actor into a part that should be played by someone younger. It's the same reason we have military-themed movies with actors who wouldn't even be qualified to serve due to age.

reply

Actually, I do know a couple of couples for whom this is true and in both cases the wife is military. One has a husband ten to fifteen years older, the other a husband ten years younger.

So am I correct in assuming that "Harold and Maude" is not one of your favorite movies??

reply

FWIW, Fred's second wife Robyn was 45 years younger than he.

reply

It's gross, but that's how it goes in the movies. It happens in real life too, but there usually is a goldigger and an elderly rich person involved.

reply

So, my husband was thirteen years older than me, but we were middle-class. He has died, which is why I use the past tense. But marrying him, not a wealthy man, did that make me a gold-digger? Your thinking makes you a bigot.

I think Astaire's character is suppose to be in his early 30's, the actual age of Astaire the actor.

To be honest, I thought the dad looked quite a bit older than 52 and thought Astaire looked younger than 43.
