Court Martial

Dixie Smith is up for oa court martial after he admitted to striking an enlisted man. Despite appeals from the other parties involved it was apparent the charge was going to stick. A few scenes lated Dixie Smith is back with the same rank and position without any explanation.

I was surprised by this also being a retired air force member. In fact the movie seemed to drop the whole CM thing; maybe he was given non-judicial punishment via a captains mast but he still has his full rank.

The commanding officer has a lot of options when military members are charged with a crime. Depending on the nature of the crime and if he is or is not a flight risk he could be confirmed in the brig, restricted to barracks, etc. So it could be possible for him to be assigned to a ship. But considering the nature of his crime, beating an enlisted man, I doubt if he would be placed in any command position.

For example today I read that a air force NCO was facing a CM for sexual misconduct. From what I can gather from the news report he was not confined in jail but more than likely was confined to base. But he just got on his motorcycle, rode off, and disappeared for now.
