Smoking

It seems to me that there was a noticeable lack of cigarette smoking in this film as well as in Stevens' The More The Merrier which I watched the night before this one.
It seems like films of this period have a lot of smoking in them and these two didn't. Was that a conscious thing on director Stevens part?
