W.C. Fields

To anyone who's seen this film, what is Fields's role? I'm guessing it's not too substantial, but I'd still like to see him in it.

reply

He plays a lecturer who bilks the rich crowd who listens to him. Typical Fields in one say, substandard in others.

But enjoyable to watch if you haven't seen it.

"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

Why was this cut from the theatrical release?

Velvet Voice

reply

Probably for time--however, seeing it now, it sticks out from the rest and isn't in the same spirit.

I just saw this again for the first time in several decades and it was the first time I've ever seen the restored Fields segment. Now I know why it was cut from the film. It isn't very good. Fields was wasted in this poorly written sequence, which suffers in comparison to the magnificent episodes with EG Robinson and Charles Laughton.

I agree that Robinson and Especially Laughton who was thoroughly cast against type ( and looked like he enjoyed himself), were the best. But seeing a WC Fields performance restored should be considered a plus, especially because his movies are rarely shown ( even the Universal films like ' The Bank Dick' cannot be found on Turner Classic Movies). This does not even include lost movies like ' The Potters' or 'That Royle Girl.' Besides I thought Fields was better then most of The stars in the film ( except again Robinson and Leighton). How anyone could not enjoy seeing perhaps the greatest comic actor in American History is beyond me.
