'That Old Black Magic'

I would say that this was most likely the best of the morale-lifting World War II ensemble musicals. The number, "That Old Black Magic" really stood out.

"That Old Black Magic" by songwriter Harold Arlen is a part of American musical history. It is a haunting, descriptive, sensitively-written song. As sung by Johnny Johnston and beautifully danced by Vera Zorina, it is a real show-stopper. I really fell in love with Zorina after seeing this film.

I stayed in love with her unitl I saw her in "Lousiana Purchase" (1941) on TV some years later. She still danced like a butterfly, but she had a horrible, gutteral Icelandic accent, and a face like a horse.

I never fell out of love with a movie star so quickly in my life.
