The Opening

When I first saw this movie I was instantly stunned and shocked that the production code failed to see right through Dietrich's blouse, literally! Not that I'm a big fan of the code, in fact I believe a director should be able to express themselves fully, however I was just amazed that you could see right through Marlene's blouse. Did anyone else see this or have any other info about it? lol.

To the OP: You're justified in taking notice of this because I just watched this film and Miss Dietrich's first scene is striking. How can you help but notice this? I don't know how they got away with that but who can really say that was inappropriate wardrobe for her character in the film?

One is tempted to conclude Marlene was for some reason specially exempted from "the Code". She has a similarly semi-toppless scene in Seven Sinners. These scenes support my oft-expressed opinion that the studios followed the code only when it suited them. It is not like they were breaking a law if the did not. They knew why Marlene was a box office draw.

Speaking of "support", Marlene didn't need much, even at age 40, judging my this scene. Wow! whatta babe! Proof positive of my life-long opinion that women are at their best in late thirties and early forties. To me at least, she looked better in this one than the did in Morocco more than ten years earlier.

Haha, great thread. Count me in as another viewer who was charmed by Ms. Dietrich's lovely figure in the opening scene. I find her beautiful in all of her films, but this one was a real treat.
