many years later......
I, too, love Wonder Boys. So here's what I think. James Leer(Tobey Mcuire), is obsessed with Hollywood lore and legend. At the Chancellor's party he rattles off a long list of Hollywood stars that had committed suicide.
When his teacher asked him what movie he had gone to see he said "Son of Fury".
Then the two of them engage in a conversation, about who's in it, and that both female leads careers were ruined by mental problems (Gene Tierney and Frances Farmer) I'll also add that George Sanders, who also starred in the film, committed suicide.
I believe I saw a copy of Hollywood Babylon, on a desk, in his room in a later scene.
So, to wrap it up, he likes old movies and gory celebrity gossip.
Since my late elders enjoyed his acting to some extent, I have been watching a few of Tyrone P's films. Some I am neutral on, a few I really like. I read Tyrone died on the set of his last film while engaging in a duel scene with Saunders. According to reports, they did a lot of movies together.
