Holmes fighting the nazis!!!

I was a bit dissapointing after I saw the movie, obviously is not up to the standars of Peter Cushing and the Baskerville movie, and the whole idea of Holmes out of his time seems almost stupid ,( when Holmes cheated Moriarty with a very infantile trick to retard all the action ,Moriarty didnĀ“t look like a criminal mastermind at all ) but beyond those mistakes, the film is quite enjoyable, especially because of the ambients .

i also love the Hound of the Baskervilles with peter cushing but you should also check out the version of the Hound with basil rathbone. while i love peter cushing i have to admit that the rathbone version was a little better (although his other holmes movies never reached the Hound).

The first Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes movie was done in the 1930's when the studio had a bigger budget. The later movies were done during WWII and the studio had to contend with wartime shortages of materials and a smaller budget. So they came up with the idea to "Modernize" the story lines therefore they were able to use props from other movies. They just did not have the money or material to do a victorian era type film.

The first two Rathbone/Bruce Holmes films..aka. THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, were both made at 20th Century Fox. Fox had a much bigger budget.

The Later Holmes Films were done at Universal, which was much lower on the food chain. They were wonderful for what they were, and extremely entertaining...but the two Fox Holmes films were SUBLIME.

Then there was the hound with Stewart Granger as Holmes, this one has been done more then any of the others.

I love Peter's as well nice to see both him and Lee play good guys for once.
I saw Basil's a few years back which turns out different then Pete's.

Little side story at last in 1975 we got our first color set and so our local
station (now days the CW) had the 1959 one with Peter what a letdown it was a B&W
print just like many of the G.O. film(s) in school.

The WW2 intrigue Rathbone Holmes' have always been my favorite, after the Hound of course. There's a certain sense of logic about Holmes pitting his wits to help out with the war effort.

I think that Sherlock Holmes being set in the early 1940s war period works well. Moriarty perhaps didn't come across as a really ace criminal in the film. But I like how the sadistic side of his nature was well played by Lionel Atwill.

Yeah, I didn't really like Holmes in the Fourties. It wasn't totally stupid, but he just works better in the Victorian era. It's as if we were to see Biggles in the Falklands or Alan Quartermain in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban.

Doyle's books are more interesting than any of the films. The Rathbone-Bruce collection of films are way off character when it comes to Watson. Nigel Bruce plays Watson like many of his other characters-a bumbling, forgetful lummox.
The Watson from ACD's Sherlock Holmes novels is a decorated war hero and quite the lady's man...The books are a great read.
