never a dull moment

The stage show and the film of Chicago had been seen by me and were enjoyable.
But I had wanted to see the movie Roxie Hart ever since finding out that it was inspired by a true story and that Ginger Rogers was in it. What I had expected was a drama, with Rogers as a tough talking dame behind bars who wants to clear her name.

What I saw was a lively and entertaining comedy that had something to say about the lawyers, showbusiness, and the press.

Maybe more could have been done with Roxie competing for attention with Two
Gun Gertie. They were two such different types, one the flirt and the fake , the other butch, with a chip on her shoulder.

Fortunately, Ginger Rogers was cast in the lead role. Her dancing helped the story move along at it's fast pace.

A very good recurring scene was that of the radio announcer at the trial. His deadpan delivery and poker face while advertising remedies for ailments was in sharp contrast to the hilarious show in the courtroom. With the rise of the mass media, commercialism would inundate the public.
