I never thought I'd see... (spoilers)

... John Wayne killed by a giant octopus. Kind of a different role for him.

reply

He wasn't actually killed by the octopus.
This is a very similar end to "Wake of the Red Witch." These are two of the six in which Wayne dies.

reply

Eleven actually, although some of them were very early on in his career.

I think most people count those after Stagecoach in 1939. I don't remember the earlier ones. The list I have has nine. Two of those are disputable:

Reap the Wild Wind - Taken under when ship he was diving on slipped off reef.
Wake of the Red Witch - Same as Reap the Wild Wind
The Fighting Seabees - Gunshot and explosion
Sands of Iwo Jima - Gunshot
The Alamo - Lance and explosion
The Cowboys - Gunshot
The Shootist - Gunshot
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Shouldn't be counted. He was dead at the beginning due to old age.
The Sea Chase - Undetermined. Capt. Ehrlich was a survivor and he and Elsa probably survived and made it to safety.

So, that makes my previous post in error. There are seven in which Wayne is actually killed. Not counting earlier movies. Note that in all seven the characters death had a lesson to it.

And it wasn't an octopus it was a squid.
