So Bad It's GOOD....

Geez it was sappy and overly-melodramatic, and the acting was meh!

And yet....completely enjoyable and watchable...not sure if it's just because the story of Lou Gehrig is so compelling and sad, but I sure don't think it is because of the director's skill, nor the acting of any of the principals.

Then again, any movie that has Babe Ruth in it...playing himself, cannot really go wrong!

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

From a baseball fan's perspective, it's pretty awful. It's very much a product of its time -- hero-worshiping, highly fictionalized, sappy as hell.

Still, I fully agree -- it's fun to watch, perhaps because of those aspects. They remind us of another time in America, a simpler time.

I can't stop being a baseball fan, but maybe I can put away some of my cynicism for a couple of hours. If I can't do that, I can enjoy it by going all MST3K on it. 

Interesting assessment of the movie, Howya.

I am a huge baseball fan. Absolutely huge. I am a student of the game's history, yet I have never seen this movie, surprisingly enough. I picked up a Warner Brothers 4 packs of DVD movies with Pride of the Yankees, Bang The Drum Slowly, Cobb and Fear Strikes Out a little over a month ago, but I haven't gotten around to watching it. I'm going to check out Pride probably tonight. Let's see if I agree with your take.
