Leaving gloves on the field?

In one of the scenes after Gehrig strikes out, he goes and picks up his glove, lying on the field just a few feet off of first base. What an interesting tradition that no longer occurs. What other things did they used to do that they no longer do today?

Flannel uniforms. Imagine playing a doubleheader in one of those on a 100 degree day.

Wait, didn't George Costanza try to bring those back? Oh, wait, never mind.

What about "pepper"? There's always a sign for "no pepper" near home plate. Why not? Do guys still do it anyway?

they no longer put the bats out on the grass in front of the dugout. he got the nickname tanglefoot for tripping over the bats one day

Ah, good point. Any info on pepper games? Do major leaguers still play pepper? And why would the team want them not to play?

i have seen major and minor leaguers playing pepper, but i think it is a safety issue for fans. that is why you don't see it regularly

Ive never seen it (but I wont contradict anybody who has) and I go to maybe 4 or 5 games a year. You see those signs because you hit the balls harder than you think when you play and its a safety issue for fans and its a maintenance issue for walls and dugouts- basically anything with paint.

The "No Pepper" signs at the ballparks is basically the groundskeepers to keep the players off the grass between and up to the dugout areas. The players have a habit of congregating in that area causing much stress on the grass and to keep it from turning into dirt. It is just to remind the players to do that sort of thing in the outfield grass.

Baseball players are supposed to warm up in the outfield and they may play pepper in that area. Most of this happens hours before the game as players stretch, warm up, team may alternate infield-outfield and batting practice(home team first in each case), and to give time for the final prep of the infield for home plate meeting around 5 minutes prior to game time. It is almost ritual.

The rules were put in place by Ford Frick in November of 1953 for the 1954 season.
