Best DVD transfer?

My IMAGE transfer is only OK--not particularly crisp, rather scratchy. Does anyone know of a better DVD transfer out there. Might CRITERION be thinking of a restoration and a reissue?

reply

I just got a Korean DVD (with English subs and spoken in Italian) the picture was pretty good, no complaints, but I went to bed last night wondering why the hell hasn't criterion put this one up yet. Hopefully we'll be seeing it in the near future, they got the best transfers/extras/movies.

reply

Watched the DVD from Image last night. Thought the subtitles were poor and took away from Visconti's usually poetic touch.

Or maybe it was because I wasn't acquainted with the source material and prefer Visconti's harsher critiques like Bellissima...

Either way, Criterion, pick this up!

I want a Criterion DVD or better yet a Blu-ray.

I love this film. By far the best adaptation of the source material, even if it was 'lifted.'

As of now (2014), the best DVD transfer is the one from Ripley's Home Video (which has English subtitles!)

reply

The DVD from Ripley is also in PAL format, not NTSC.

Any updates? I understand that the original negative was destroyed, and that the remaining elements are not great, but I would imagine with digital technology this title could be remastered to a condition much better than what is currently available.
