I saw this film last week apart from some parts that were blatant propaganda (as you'd expect for a 1942 film) it was great. I loved the way they all stood in the field after jumping out the plane calmly discussing what they should do - true stiff upper lip stuff. Also the bit where the yorkshireman doesn't want to go in the catholic church because of what the people back home would think if they found out. I give it 8/10.

SPOILER SPOILER.I wouldn`t call it a classic but reasonably enjoyable and a nice tribute in particular to the brave civilians who helped rescue downed allied flyers during the war(watch Secret Army uk drama 1978).The actual bombing raid is quite tense and well handled, including some quite convincing model shots for the period.German characters are kept at a distance ,quite literally at times and usually introduced with loud "barked" dialogue-shame these aren`t subtitled although you get the gist of what`s being said during one of the more humourous moments in the film as the Germans accidentally start playing the Dutch national anthem. One of the best moments occurs during the scene in the church as the German fails to spot the parachute under the dress and is then mocked by the organist-great stuff and yes it is a very young Peter Ustinov as the priest.

That`s where I`d heard that surname before.Must watch Black Book,Soldier Of Orange again.Have you watched BB recently-I`m not sure it`s quite as good second time round unlike SOO which constantly improves with each viewing.

I thought as much. Now of course you`ve reminded me of that gratuitous shower scene(shame Denise wasn`t there though) from Starstrip Hooters which i`ll have to watch again-think i`ll watch it in place of BB actually.

In "It Happened Here",about a successful German invasion of mainland Britain, one of the characters comments that to defeat fascism you have to become one yourself .Have you seen this film Squeeth?-would be interested in your views on it.Post some comments on the IHH board if you`ve seen it and i`ll have a read.

I came across this movie amongst a selection of $2 DVDs.
I aways enjoy a good war story and this one did not disappoint. I am sure a scene has been lost though as at the end of the movie they are in a rowboat and next they are in a much more elaborate boat with a hatch.
Did anyone else notice this?

The "much more elaborate boat with a hatch" was a small floating platform, a rescue buoy. These were set up by the Luftwaffe to help any airmen shot down over the channel. We didn't see them row all the way out to it and climb on board. Nor did we see them overpower the two Luftwaffe men that were already aboard.

See http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=31501&highlight=bouy for some details and pictures.

The RAF crew told us that they'd cut the cables and were drifting. They made themselves something to eat while they waited to see who would rescue them.

The more elaborate "boat" with a hatch is a German life platform Moored just of the coast of Europe to save downed fliers of the Luftwaffe.
Basically a floating hut. Not a boat as such

Hmmmm...
Well, I didn't like it as much as everyone else did... The first 1/2 hour was VERY powerful (the war scenes with no music & understated sound effects) But one they all bailed out... The film kinda turned dull for me... Just my opinoin...

Trust me,

Hah, I found it quite opposite. I wasn't really into the first 30 mins because it seemed tedious to me. Maybe people who enjoy aviation and things like that would like it. I'll give it credit for the ingenuity with just the humming of the plane and most other sounds blocked out. But the occasional comments the crew made to each other is about all that kept me interested. Once they landed then story really seemed to gather pace for me..

It is not Powell & Pressburger's best mainly because it is a quickly made propaganda piece.

It's that man again!!
