Bela Lugosi's Character (Spoilers)

What happened to Rolf? The fate of every other character is clearly provided. Rolf is the only character whose fate is ambiguous.

Are we to believe he perished in the fire? I don't care for that assumption since he could have easily left the mansion. Any thoughts or opinions would be welcomed.
