I watched it last night

I've read about this film for years, finally saw it on TCM last night. It has the energy and "pow" factor of most Warner Brothers's films, but is marred by q weak script. I found the antics of Alan Hale and Frank McHugh to be annoying though both were great actors. Comedy ages quickly, drama doesn't. Of the three leads, George Raft was the only one who in my opinion was cast according to type - Dietrich was too mature and detached for this role, Robinson, sympathetic, but also too mature. In my opinioin, Robinson's elegance always shines through blue-collar roles though he tried his best. Still, it's worth a look if only for its bit in film history. Raft turned down "The Maltese Falcon" for this film. Bugsy Siegel met Virginia Hill on "Manpower" and the writers of the film "Bugsey" stole the line "go jerk yourself a soda" from this film.

I agree that the movie was weakened by the cartoonish comedy involving Hale, McHugh, and the other electric company workers. Hale's character, in particular, was ridiculous and annoying. Without the overdone comedic scenes, this would have been a much better film.

I agree with liscarkat. I have to fast-forward through the so-called comedy in order to watch the three great stars at work.
